Chakra Tools: Essential Oils
Essential oils come from plants, flower, leaf, seed,
bark and fruit and represent healing and living energy. They contain chemical
components that can exert specific effects on the mind and body.
Lavender, for example, increases alpha waves in the back
of the head which promotes a sense of relaxation. Jasmine, on the other hand,
increases beta waves in the front of the head, in turn promoting a more alert
state.
Humans have the capability to distinguish 10,000
different smells which all affect our system in three ways - pharmacologically
(interacting with the body's chemistry), physiologically (producing a
stimulating or sedating effect), and psychologically (prompting emotional
responses, often through memory).
The process of using essential oil smells for healing is
called Aromatherapy. Aromatherapy works on our sense of smell and by absorption
into the bloodstream. Smells enter the nose where olfactory receptors transport
them to the limbic system - the part of the brain that controls our moods,
emotions, memory, instinct and learning.
Make sure you only use pure oils (avoid 'fragrant' oils
as they are synthetic), and seek medical advice before 'playing' with pure
essential oils. In my 7-Day Chakra Workout, I use the Chakra
Essentials range of blends as a starting point for your own exploration of
aromatherapy.
